Unlawful Eviction In Shantalla

category galway | housing | news report author Saturday April 05, 2014 20:06author by SHAC - Social Housing Action Co-op Report this post to the editors

A Galway squat has recently been evicted. The property had been recently taken over by Bank of Scotland who are appointed KPMG as caretakers of the property.

KPMG audited the accounts of Anglo Irish Bank during the boom period. Now they make money as liquidators, taking over and selling the property of people who have gotten into bad debt……maybe because they took out a dodgy loan with Anglo? They made loads of money during the boom, and since the crash, they're there waiting like vultures to make even more money.

"This place was our home", said one of the people who'd just been evicted. "…and now it's going to join the thousands of derelict houses in galway, which keep the rent in the city artificially high"

The day saw two Gardai kicking down the door while several occupants were still inside. They along with a few security they began ejecting the occupants and their belongings out onto the street. The sheriff turned up briefly but would not answer any questions knowing well that they had no eviction order issued by a court, therefore making the eviction unlawful.

Many people showed up in solidarity, they gathered around the front of the house to show their objection to the unlawful eviction. They played music, basked in the sunshine and chatted to people who were curious to see what was happening.

Homelessness is one of the most devastating things that can happen in your life, and the gardai have facilitated the banks reposession, shame on them.

An interesting fact i never knew there were at least 76 empty houses per homeless person.

And yes the rents are high in galway i have a sister out there who rents there and is finding it hard to make ends meet as it is.

Great to see the community spirit, irish people really are great when it counts they will get out there and show support.

The banks really have a lot to answer for, does anybody rememeber the two anglo boys on the phone skittering about how they were going to con the nation, and how you have to have skin in the game, where are the gardai to hold these people accountable?

There were phone records going back five years that they were aware of,and yet nothing was done.

One law for the rich, another for the poor.

It's terrible to know that evictions are happening in Ireland on a large scale. The banks with the help of the Fianna Fáil/Green Government wrecked the economy. Now the banks with the help of the Fine Gael/Labour Government are evicting people. It should be the other way around - the people evicting the banks and the government parties.

As Moliere said in one of his plays: "The injustice of it is perfect. I shall bequeath it to posterity".

Well done to the brave few who give support to the victims of these heinous crimes
