First ever Irish Anti-Prohibition of Cannabis March

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Thursday April 19, 2007 21:00author by World Wide Marijuana Marcher - Centre for Cannabis Policy Reform Ireland (CCPR) Report this post to the editors

End Prohibiton Now!

On the 6th Of May 2007, Ireland will have its first ever End the Proihibition of Cannabis March! This issue has been brushed under the carpets by the politicians for long enough--Cannabis smokers are people-not criminals!

Assemble 2pm at the Garden of Remembrance-bring colour, good cheer and friends!
untitled.jpg

For too long now, ordinary hard working people have been treated like criminals because of their choice to smoke cannabis.

This march will be the first form of official protest against cannabis prohibition in Irish history. We encourage everyone to come along and voice your opposition to our failed and hypocritical cannabis laws.

These outdated laws have turned many decent people into criminals in the eyes of the "justice system" and yet the prohibiton has not succeeded in stopping people enjoying responsibly the joys marijuana can bring.

In addition to this--

Limiting the use of the cannabis intrudes on personal freedom. Keeping Cannabis prohibited often traps young people in a flawed system that brings them into interaction with criminals and as a result harder drugs-Cannabis is NOT the gateway, prohibition is!

Like alcohol, or cigarettes,or even coffee, marijuana is one of life's little pleasures for some people.,and it is a part of nature, since when was it o.k to make nature illegal?? There are medical benefits such as the those for cancer patients and sufferers of arthritis, glaucoma, cystic fibrosis and many other illnesses.

The law is totally inconsistent and disproportional in its effect- alcohol causes 1000s of deaths per year, milions of euro in health costs and innumerable problems in people's lives-but it is both legal and encouraged!

And on a very basic level, imiting the use of the cannabis intrudes on people's personal freedom of choice on how to conduct their lives.

There is much more information on the march and its mission on ccpr-ireland.bebo.com

Participate in the End Prohibition March on the 6th of May!

World Wide Marijuana March (WWMM) has held street stalls and organised two music events – ‘Smoke Signals’ in Dublin city centre, to raise awareness about the upcoming public demonstration to be held on the 6th of May 2007 at 2pm in Dublin City Centre in support of legalising Cannabis recreational use, medical application and encouraging more industrial Hemp use.
WWMM Spokesperson, Tim Reilly, commented, "World Wide Marijuana March is a broad movement of people who have come together to end the criminalisation of Cannabis. We view Cannabis use as something that can be enjoyed in a responsible manner and substantially less harmful to individual health if it is controlled and regulated and people are educated about safer use and the risks involved in it's abuse.”
"We hope to bring has been attatched to it, by decades of lies and deceit. We plan to work bit by bit, for as long as it takes to improve the overall situation for cannabis users and we believe we have already begun to succeed in this goal. We do not expect this to be an easy or a short road, but we intend to stay with it to the end!"
"Accusations that Cannabis use leads to schizophrenia should be seen in light of the fact that Alcohol use is also likely, to cause serious mental health problems and regulation of Cannabis could greatly reduce the risks involved. We feel that the continued criminalisation of Cannabis is what in fact makes Cannabis a gateway drug and only by legalising Cannabis can we remove the ‘gateway’ effect caused by the violent drug gangs who currently control the drugs trade.”
“WWMM-Ireland calls on the government to rethink the out-dated laws on recreational use of Cannabis and act fast to allow its highly beneficial medical applications. To allow for the private growth of Cannabis and to encourage the industrial development of Hemp which can be highly useful as a Bio-Fuel, to name but one of many uses.”
“We have been getting a large amount of interest from the public and expect a large turnout on the May 6th rally. Anyone interested in realising the Legalisation of Cannabis is urged to join with WWMM in Dublin in solidarity with the numerous demonstrations that will be taking place throughout the world, in Dublin’s first ever "Anti-Prohibition of Cannabis March".”
