Unite to accept Croke Park deal

category national | worker & community struggles and protests | other press author Monday June 28, 2010 16:54author by Godot Report this post to the editors

In a statement released today the union announced that it was entering the implementation process to avoid "victimisation of its members".

The union, which represents 6,000 public sector workers, previously rejected the deal.

Unite will not be polling members on the u-turn.

Should that read 60,000 public sector workers

Unite's decision not to leave ICTU can only leave the likes of CPSU voting in favour of the deal in the Autumn re-ballot. This is only the first of major attacks on workers. Let's hope the way forward can be created amongst the no-voters in the various unions after the treacherous sell-out.

I voted against the deal as a SIPTU member, and got most of the people in my department to do the same. If the majority of members across all the unions had voted against the deal I would have been outraged if pro Croke Park unions refused to accept the decision of members.

I'm very disappointed that the vote was lost and we need to figure out a new way forward, but the vote was lost and we should abide by the decision. I think Unite is right to accept the decision.

Jimmy Kelly - Another unfortunate example of a ex-left getting sucked into partnership and away from struggle as a method to win and defend workers' rights. I wonder if this will be SWP's official position on the Croke Park deal?
